This weekend, A and I watched "The Devil and Daniel Johnston," a poignant portrait of the outsider artist and musician who found his way to fame...and learned again why art is sometimes all we have against the devils outside and in. My buddy Jim Doppke had sent me mix tapes with his song "Speeding Motorcycle," of which I heard Mary Lou Lord do a sweet version on her ep. But I was unprepared for how deeply vulnerable, how naifish and cunning, these songs appear, despite their rough and awkward surfaces.
