This peace symbol, or CND, comes from the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and combines the semaphoric signs for "N" (two flags diagonally downward) and "D" (one flag straight up and one straight down). Apparently, there is some mythology regarding its other valences--similar to the symbol for anarchy, and echoes the occult symbol for death. The latter, of course, is suggestive of the deep fear of pacifist ideology...Further thoughts on the cultural labor of poetry and art.
